Seabiscuit, along with his jockey, trainer and owner, all triumphed over adversity, making the thoroughbred the number one story in 1938. Smarty Jones, another unlikely champion, nearly killed himself when, as a two-year old, he reared up, slamming his head on an unpadded iron bar. The horse collapsed and trainer John Servis thought Smarty had killed himself.
