FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Racing to the Finish
FORT LAUDERDALE, July 2004:
Seabiscuit, along with his jockey, trainer and owner, all triumphed
over adversity, making the thoroughbred the number one story in
1938. He received more newspaper column inches than Roosevelt,
who was second, and Hitler, who was third. His story sparked the
best selling book Seabiscuit, an American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand
and last summers movie, Seabiscuit. Smarty Jones, another unlikely
champion, nearly killed himself when, as a two-year old, he reared
up, slamming his head on an unpadded iron bar. The horse collapsed
and trainer John Servis thought Smarty had killed himself. But
though his skull was fractured and the accident nearly cost him
his left eye, less then a year later, Smarty Jones went on to
win the 2004 Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
Seabiscuit and Smarty Jones are
two real American heroes. But while true stories are sometimes
better than fiction, that's not always the case. In the fictional
world of horse racing, there's Koenig's Wonder
, a Kentucky Derby winning thoroughbred who stars in author Linda
Kuhlmann's novel of family secrets, intrigue, greed and murder.
In 1937, two brothers are forced to leave their home in Germany,
arriving in New York City with only a white Lipizzan stallion
and a stolen Friedrich painting. What happens next affects three
generations of the Maseman family as they are torn apart by greed,
war, and revenge.
Years later, Emma Maseman discovers
the harsh truth about her family when she is investigated for
the theft of Koenig's Wonder. As the
mysteries unravel, Kenning's Wonder
races toward the finish line in a brilliant and thoroughly engrossing
fashion.
